Considered as the main religious site thronged by Tunisians, Zitouna Mosque is one of the iconic landmarks of the country. Having the literal meaning as Olive tree, the name tells about the culture of teaching under the olive tree followed by the founder of the mosque. In the older time it is also treated as an important house of higher learning.
Reflecting the religious sentiments of large number of population, Zitouna Mosque Tunis is rated among the top tourist attraction. Historically and through various documents records, the mosque was initially the site of a Christian monk and was built around 732 AD. In the mid of 9th century it is rebuild and some new features are added but the latest change was done only in the 19th century when the minaret was modified.
Today this place of worship is filled with a large chunk of Muslim and non-Muslim worshippers. Situated beautifully in Tunis, Medina district the mosque was constructed by the ruler Obeid Allah Ibn-al-Habhab in the 9th century to enjoy the splendor of Tunis.
The most notable feature of Zitouna Mosque in Tunis is 44 meters high minaret that can be seen from a distance from the city center. In addition to these, you can also offer prayers in the praying room and can feed the pigeons in the open courtyard. Not just only this, the patio is surrounded by galleries containing huge number of religious records and paintings.
