Located in the Halfaouine Quarter of Tunis, The National Theatre of Tunisia is placed in the Khaznadar Palace. Built in the year 1902, the National Theatre is situated closed to the Cafe de Paris on the southern side of Avenue Habib Bourguiba.
Being owned by the Tunisian Government, National Theatre is a government company of culture nature. Created under Law No. 113 of 30 December 1983 relating to acts 73-74 of the Finance Act of 1983, this theatre meets the same norms like other public institutions.
Renamed by the designation as the Palace Theater, the National Theater was built in the Art Nouveau style. The theatre features a big hall with a capacity of 350 people, a rehearsal hall and a large place for big performances. Being home to every culture season performances, every year from October 1 to June 30, more than 80 performances are being hosted in the theater.
From the time of existence till today, this theater of Tunisia has hosted many big names of Tunisian and international theatrical scene. Some of the popular artists are Bernhardt, Pauline Carton, Jean Marais and Gérard Philipe. |
