Located in the beautiful island of Djerba in Tunisia, Borj El Kebir is one of the interesting historical sites associated with mighty Romans in the country. Also known as Borj Ghazi Mustapha, this 15th century citadel overlooks the azure of sea that gives some magical appeal to the site.
Besides the stronghold of Romans as per the historical evidences, Borj El Kebir Djerba is very first built by Roger de Lluria, the King of Sicily, in 1289. But it more or less, presently, showcases the rebuilt marks of Ottoman kings, who expelled Spanish forces in 1560.
Apart from its historical significance, Borj El Kebir in Djerba is mainly famed for some other reasons. About hundreds of Spanish soldiers' skulls were kept on display inside a tower of the fortress for almost 200 years. While visiting Djerba, travelers can also explore some other places of interest like Djerba Explore Park, Houmt Souk, Museum of Popular Arts and Synagogue of El-Ghriba.
