It also has beautiful beaches and packed market on Fridays where you can bargain for the finest goods and items like the plaited mats, embroidery and woven fabrics. In this authentic city of pottery and ceramics, tourists can view the potter’s wheel spinning out the astonishing work of art. Nabeul also has a museum which can be visited to view the Roman and Punic artifacts.
Nabeul has a very ancient history which dates to Roman times. In the ancient times, it was known as Neapolis and was once the centre where garum was produced which was used for seasoning all sorts of food. The garum usually was made by leaving fish and intestines with salt in an open tank and had a foul smell. However, to produce it in private home was regarded illegal. In the third Punic War it was occupied by the Romans. In the 2nd century AD it earned the status of colonia and in the 16th and 17th century, the Andalusian refugees took shelter in Nabeul and their influence is marked in the local art.
Old Quarters
The Old Quarters is located around Avenue Farhet Hached which extends for about 300 metres. In the best parts of the Quarters, you can find shops or cafes. Outside the avenue, the streets feature white walls with beautifully decorated doors.
Ceramic Potteries
If you appreciate colorful ceramics, crude patterned plates and other decorative items, Nabeul is a place to come. Nabeul is famous for selling and producing decorative items in Tunisia. If you wish, you can purchase a plate with a diameter of 30 cm which will cost around $5.
Avenue Bourguiba
Avenue Bourguiba is bordered with a Eurasian shrub called Oleander which starts from the centre of the town and runs along to the sea characterized by splendid villas, decorative shops and amazing historical museums.
Friday Market
Friday market which is hosted every week was once famous for camel trading. But now in the present Friday market of Nabeul, you can purchase from spices to silver artifacts. You can also look for some excellent ceramic craftworks, embroidery works, perfumes which are produced using ancient recipes, esparto goods, stone images, decorated ironware and many more objects.
The Beach
Nabeul beach is very long and have a good quality of sand. However, the public areas of the beach are not clean and also don’t have beautiful background.
Festivals
The important festival in Nabeul is the Orange Flower festival which is usually held in the month of April. The other festival is the Summer festival.
Getting Around
Nabeul can be well connected to other Tunisian cities by buses, taxis and trains. In Nabeul, there are plenty of taxis and also horse driven caleches which are exciting to get around in the city. There is a main station, two bus and louage (shared taxi) stations for transportation service.
From Avenue Habib Bourguiba, you can get trains to Tunis and Hammamet or Bir Bou Rekba. From the bus station, you can get bus service to Tunis, Hammamet, Korbous, El Haouaria, Soliman, Kairouan, Zaghouan, Sousse and the airport of Tunis-Carthage. |
