Belonging to the Husseinite dynasty, Tourbet El Bey is a catacomb designed in Ottoman style and is located in the capital city of Tunis. The Husseinite dynasty is one of the important dynasties that ruled Tunisia for a period of more than two centuries.
Set inside an 18th century building, Tourbet El Bey acts as the burial place for all the Husseinite Beys along with their families and their favorite ministers and court people. There are all together 160 graves and all are built in marble. Elegantly designed and decorated with a touch of Italian influences, the graves also occupy the courtyard and a set of rooms. Walls of each room are adorned with polychrome faience tiles on the outer side while the ceiling domes are covered with green tiles.
The burial chamber was erected during the reign of Ali Bey II from the year1759 to1782. The most notable room that houses the graves of the beys is partly covered with wrought
marble. To distinguish it, the male and female graves are crested with some epitaphs. The male graves are characterized by a marble tarbouch and on the other side the female graves have simple marble plates.
Located away from the market area in the peaceful residential district of Medina, this burial place is opened for all visitors and the entrance fee is applicable. You can come and see this catacomb throughout the week except on Sundays from 9.30 am to 4.30pm. |
