Medina of Kairouan is one of the best preserved historical areas in Tunisia. Surrounded with 10m/33 feet high brick walls from all the sides and armored by several towers, the medina is one of the main tourist attraction sights in this capital city of Kairouan (http://www.sunnytunisia.com/Tunisia/Locations/Kairouan.html) Governorate. The present walls were constructed around 1706-12 on the sites of earlier structures that were built in the last phase of the 8th century.
Like the other traditional medinas, Kairouan Medina is divided into various souks (to be done) (traditional markets). Whether you want to buy some perfumes or accessories or handicraft items, these souks are just perfect for all. Souks at Medina of Kairouan sell shoes, clothes, carpentry items, antique art works, carpets and many more things.
Apart from shopping point of view, Kairouan Medina is also worthy to visit from historical point of interest. Though the streets here too are quite narrow like other medinas of the country but still the arched upper dwellings of some of the lanes and other architectural works make them interesting to stroll around.
Along with souks, Medina in Kairouan is also home to "Mosque of the Three Gates". Established in 866, this religious site is mainly noted for its striking façade that reflects notable works of Islamic architecture. As per the mosque's name suggests, there are three arched entrances that are surmounted by inscriptions written in Kufic script along with some floral and geometric designs. There is a prayer hall that features a nave and two aisles, and a small minaret. |
