Located in the Jewish village of Hara Seghira, El Ghriba Synagogue is the oldest synagogue in Africa and one of the oldest in the world. Also known as the Djerba Synagogue, this synagogue site was built by the Jewish community for their daily prayers.
Being home to oldest Torah in the world, this monument holds a great respect among the Jewish community. Established around 2,000 years ago, the building of El Ghriba Synagogue was fully built in Moorish architectural style and famous as an ancient destination of an annual pilgrimage. The inner part of the Synagogue is brighter than the exterior designs. It is also believed that the world's oldest Sefer Torah is preserved by the inner sanctuary of the Synagogue.
Today, the building provides shelter to a large number of pilgrims visiting Djerba. Presently Jewish people daily visit this place to offer regular prayers. Not just only Jews, the non-Jews can also visit this synagogue but they should left a small gift on the visit. |
