Chott el Djerid, the location for the film Star War series, is the largest salt pan of Sahara. Located in the southern Tunisia, it has many picturesque oases to visit like the oases of Tamerza, Chebika, Midès, Kebili, Douz and Bled el Djerid. If visiting in the month of December, you will be fortunate to participate in the Sahara Festival.
Djerid- Upland Oases
Towards the north side of Djerid, there are three oases which are located on the high altitude. The oases of Tamerza, Chebika and Midès in Djerid give you an opportunity to enjoy beautiful scenic view of the hill. The Tamerza oasis is the largest mountain oasis lying north of the salt lakes and features two waterfalls, gorges and a town. The oasis of Midès is the most attractive mountain oasis and features a stunning gorge which extends to 3 Km. The gorge is round in shapes with contrasting colors. Chebika oasis is situated on the north of the Tunisian chotts and is a collection of desert oases which is regularly exposed to sun.
Nefzaoua
Nefzaoua oases lie towards the south-east of the Chott and the major oases- Kebili and Douz are a part of it. Kebili is situated on the eastern side of the Chott and is one of the largest desert oases. The village which is considered to be the gateway to the Sahara Desert celebrates the Sahara Festival in the month of December. Douz is the largest oasis on the western side of Tunisia where you can enjoy the weekly Thursday markets dealing in animal-stock, carpets and camels.
Oases in the Djerid
The oases located in the Djerid which is also known as the Bled el Djerid is densely populated. Also known as the “Palm Leaf” this semi-desert region features pink hills which are barren and has numerous oases and salt pans. The major towns of the Djerid are Gafsa and Tozeur.
