 Cap Bon

Cap Bon is located in the north-east of Tunisia, enclosed by the Gulf of Tunis. Also known as Sharik/ Shariq peninsula it has many important towns to visit like Nabeul, Sidi Daoud, Djebel Aboid, Kelibia, El Haouaria and many more. The places in Cap Bon are worth exploring as some are the centers of enjoying cultural activities, some for exploring Punic and Roman ruins and some for scenic beauty.

 

Nabeul
The charming Tunisian destination Nabeul has lots of attractions to see like the archaeological museum, Neapolis, Place du 7 Novembre, the camel market and some fascinating areas close to it like Beni Khiar, Dar Chaabane, Es Somaa and Korba. At the archaeological museum, you can enjoy display of some items belonging to the Punic and Roman period. The Camel Market which is held every Fridays has become a major tourist attraction. Place du 7 Novembre is the main centre with banks, restaurants and shops. The neighboring region of Beni Khiar which is known as weaver’s village is famous amidst foreign visitors for woolen blankets and kelims. Dar Chaabane is a craftsmen’s village where you can find many stone carvers. Es Somaa which is also a few distances away is a small village famouse for plaited mats. If you want to participate in the Festival of Young Theater, you can go to Korba which is 20 km away from Nabeul.

Djebel Aboid

From the Djebel Aboid, you can have the spectacular view of the west coast and islands of Zembra and Zembretta. Just outside El Haouaria, the way will lead you to Djebel Aboid. Other stunning views that you can enjoy after reaching to Djebel Aboid is the tip of Cap Bon featuring its light-house and also the north-eastern coast near Kelibia. It is a great place to enjoy hiking.

Roman Caves, El Haouaria
To the north-east of the El Haouaria, you can find the Roman caves which are carved out of sandstone close to the coast. The road which passes through the marabout of the holy man leads you to a sand track after which you can find the caves. The caves were first mined by the Carthaginians and later by the Romans. You can spend your time in discovering the caves which give the view of hard-work of the slaves.

Kelibia Fortress
Kelibia which is a renowned fishing port in the northern peninsula features a major attraction for the tourists, the Byzantine fort. The fort has excellent preserves of gateway and massive wall to view. From the bastions of the fort, you can enjoy stunning view. The excavation and restoration work is still being carried out.

Kerkoaune
Kerkoaune is located just a few distances away from Djebel Abiod and has a splendid excavation site to explore. The town of Kerkoaune was of planned in the shape of     horse-shoe and was protected by the double walls and two gates. The town was well-planned with excellent drainage system, a good network of streets, dye factory and well-established houses with marble floors, a courtyard with fountain and baths. Outside the town, the remains of necropolis was also found.

Korbous
Korbous is known for its curable spas. The water of Korbous which is rich in calcium, sulfur and sulfates is best for the treatment of skin and other diseases. Hamma el Atrous, a hot-spring, which is just 2 Km away from Korbous attracts many tourists. The hot-spring which falls into the sea has hoards of people standing on the beach. Other important feature which can be visited is the Zerziha Rock located underneath the Presidential Palace. The rock is believed to cure infertility in women.

Sidi Daoud
Sidi Daoud is a fishing port and lies close to the northern tip of Cap Bon. The place is famous for organizing the game of Tunny. If you are visiting Sidi Daoud in the months between April and July, you can enjoy the sport of fishing Tunny which is done in the most brutal way. There is also a canning factory on the harbor where the fishes are processed.

Soliman
Soliman which was founded in the 17th century is located on the north-western part of the Grombalia plain. The buildings in the town usually have the influences of Andalusian style of architecture. The main attractions which can be visited in the town are the Malikite Mosque with its semi-circular tiled roofs which is as old as the town and the Hanafite Mosque which feature octagonal minaret.

Sunshine Coast/ Cote du Soleil
Sunshine Coast which is also known as Cote du Soleil has a stretch of 12 km of road which give the most scenic view of the place. On the right side of the road there are steep hill rising as high as 419 meters and on the left side of the cliffs fall into the sea.

Zembra and Zembretta

Zembra and Zembretta are the two beautiful islands particularly known for marine reserves and is famous as home to the monk seal, the oldest sea species surviving on earth. At the time of Romans, it was known as the Aegimuri. The island is home to many migratory birds. You can also find numerous shearwaters with their nest on these islands. Zembretta is the smaller of the two islands and is inhabited whereas, Zembra which once provided solitude to the pilgrims heading to Mecca features diving center and yachting harbor.
